Polish Sigmund Menkes enrolled in the Institute of Decorative Art in Lvov at was sixteen. To make a living while studying he worked as a house painter, where he studied the fresco technique. In 1919, he enrolled in the Fine Arts Academy of Krakow. After living as a painter in Poland through the First World War, Menkes unwillingly moves to New York in 1935.
